Goal Stock Exchange – The Statistics behind Sports Betting (iStage 3)

english

Football is one of the most powerful businesses within the sport industry worldwide. The sports betting industry alone is worth anywhere between €606 and €870 billion a year. In order to predict whether a football team is going to win or lose and to calculate betting odds a successful bookmaker not only needs a good deal of luck but also profound mathematical knowledge.

In the teaching unit ‚Goal Stock Exchange‘ students discover statistics based on the sample database of the German Bundesliga 1. To start with they learn how to design a database using spreadsheets. These are used to analyse a variety of complex variables so the students can calculate the goal statistics for each football team.

The teaching unit is taken from the brochure ‘iStage 3 - Football in Science Teaching’ from the topic ‘big data’ and is suitable for mathematics, statistics and ICT classes. The complete brochure can be ordered free of charge via mail (info@science-on-stage.de) or downloaded. It was developed by 20 teachers from 15 countries around Europe. The project was proudly supported by SAP.
