Learning to Code with my child

EU Code Week is a grass-roots movement that celebrates creating with code. On Thursday 18th of October 2018, the Agios Ioannis Lefkosias Primary school (Nicosia, Cyprus) organized an interesting event-workshop for both parents and students with the topic “Coding with your child”. During the workshop, parents and students had the opportunity to learn coding and build digital literacy skills.

The students were divided into groups and accompanied by their parents, went through different stations. In those stations they built robots, they programmed, they coded using bee-bot, pro-bot, Meet Edison, Lego WeDo 2.0, Lego Mindstorms NXT, Scratch and code.org. Both parents and students went through a journey full of creative challenges and tons of fun.

Cyprus’ Minister of Education and Culture, Mr. Champiaouris, the First Operational Education Mrs. Violari, and our Inspector Mrs. Christou visited the workshop. It was an honor to have them with us during the workshop.

A great surprise for all the attendees was the arrival of NICKY the robot of the University of Nicosia. The Parents Association of Agios Ioannis Primary school in cooperation with the University of Nicosia introduced NICKY the robot to Cyprus’ Minister of  Education, students and their parents.

The students had the opportunity to see the robot, talk and interact with it. Nicky the robot impressed everyone with its knowledge, capabilities to talk, listen, express emotions and interact with people. Nicky’s presence was the highlight of the workshop!

The workshop has been coordinated by Alexia Alexandrou.
