An overview of teaching material

Due to school closures, teachers, parents as well as students are in an unusual and also difficult situation. Science on Stage would like to contribute to helping them get through the crisis and offers an overview of special teaching materials on this page. All of these are well suited for an online course or lessons at home. The materials can be downloaded for free and cover a wide range of subjects.

Lilu’s House: Language Skills through Experiments

Our teaching brochure "Lilus Haus - Language Skills through Experiments" promotes basic scientific knowledge of primary school children while simultaneously training their skills in reading, writing and speaking. Together with the fantasy creature Lilu and the girl Alina the children go on a scientific discovery tour in the bathroom, living room and kitchen where they come across ‘inexplicable’ observations. For every phenomenon that occurs to them, they need to solve tasks with fun and entertaining experiments and to reflect on these verbally.

Coding in STEM Education 

How water works:
This project is about water, its importance for us and our responsibility for water protection. Divided into three levels (easy for primary school students, medium for middle school students, and advanced for secondary school students), this project can be adjusted for collaborative work at different school levels and in cross-curricular activities. One part of the lesson unit revolves around the programming of games in Scratch. (mathematics, biology, art / primary and secondary level) 

Vacation Plant Life Saver - How to program a water can
The potted plants in school buildings often die during the summer break because nobody takes care of them—this is why schools need a Vacation Plant Life Saver. In this teaching unit, students will develop a virtual watering can. The unit is designed for students aged 10 - 14 years. (natural sciences, computer science / primary and secondary education) 

Physics Engine:
In this unit, the ‘engine’, i.e. the Scratch programming environment, is the magic tool that will help students to create interesting applications about everyday natural phenomena to better understand the laws of physics and improve their programming skills in the process. The target group of the unit is students aged 14 - 16. (physics, computer science / secondary school) 

Football in STEM education 

Data Match – Data Capture and Analysis like a Professional:
In this unit students design and program an app, with which real-time data can be collected and then shared and processed further in the cloud. During this work, they learn how the entered data can be linked and used with a screen-mapping website. This unit is realised using freeware programs such as App Inventor, and The unit is aimed at students from 15 years up. (computer sciences / secondary school) 

Goal Stock Exchange – The Statistics behind Sports Betting:
In the teaching unit ‚Goal Stock Exchange‘ students discover statistics based on the sample database of the German Bundesliga 1. To start with they learn how to design a database using spreadsheets. These are used to analyse a variety of complex variables so the students can calculate the goal statistics for each football team. The project is suitable for teenagers aged 15 and upward. (mathematics, computer science / secondary school) 

Lantern Mond and Hot Ears

Biology in primary school with ant researcher Bert Hölldobler: 
Bert Hölldobler is a world-famous ant researcher who found out how ants communicate by means of scent. In ‘Lantern Moon and Hot Ears’ he shows how primary school students can become ant researchers themselves in a playful way. (biology / primary school) 

Chemistry in primary school with Petra Mischnick:
Petra Mischnick is a chemist and she presents simple experiments for primary students showing them how to investigate the characteristics of starch, e.g. the students mix cornflour with water and see what happens to the starch paste when it is at rest, stirred or squeezed. (chemistry / primary school) 

Winning energy from renewable raw materials
Regina Palkovits is a chemical engineer and she introduces primary school students to the topics of renewable energy, environment and fuels. In a simple experiment, the students are making lamp oil from walnuts, learning about the interconnection between energy and fuels. (chemistry / primary school) 

Smartphones in Science Teaching

Spectral Sounds: Investigating the spectrum of sound & wave phenomena:
The teaching unit ‘Spectral Sounds’ uses music to help students investigate wave phenomena and behaviour in physics and science. Using microphones and smartphone apps as well as various musical instruments the students visualise acoustics and measure and analyse the recorded spectrums of sound. For this teaching unit the students should be at an age between 16 and 18 years, for certain knowledge in physics, music and maths is presumed. (physics, music, computer science / secondary school) 

Festival Projects 

Understanding geometry in a playful way - Learning by doing in mathematics:
Who was not intimidated by solid geometry? Drawing three dimensional objects on paper with all their geometrical characteristics is often a challenge for students. However with simple materials and the instructions which you will find in this teaching unit, you will find that geometry becomes more intuitive. (mathematics / secondary school) 

Strong as a bear through leverage - Feel the leverage power:
The topic of levers does not pose a problem to children. A door can be opened, a nail pulled out. Kids have to be made aware of the problem so that they can recognize it. Therefore, the kids should be given various tasks to be performed without the help of levers. Performing the task makes them aware of the need of help to solve the problem more easily, e.g. a door handle, pliers etc.Transfer tasks involving a seesaw and a mobile (a moving element hung from a string) enable the kids to apply their newly gained knowledge and communicte with others.
