Poznań: Science on Stage Poland organised a teacher seminar

Review: On 25 November 2017 Science on Stage Poland organised a teacher seminar at the Faculty of Physics, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań summarising the European Science on Stage festival 2017 in Debrecen, Hungary. The Polish teacher delegation shared its festival experiences and new teaching concepts. Also 'iStage 3 - Football in Science Teaching' was presented by Maria Dobkowska. 53 STEM teachers from all over the country took part in the seminar. In addition, Science on Stage Poland conducted an on-line Internet transmission from this seminar. At the website the Polish Science on Stage team included film recordings of the seminar presentations and discussions.

Greece-Romania: New joint project about experimental physics

From 2 to 6 February Laszlo Papp from the Scoala Gimnaziala in Romania visited Panagiotis Lazos at the 26th Senior High School of Athens-Marasleio in Greece. There he presented four experiments to about 25 students that also got involved in explaining the observed phenomena. Afterwards the students performed the experiments on their own, showing devices that they constructed for different activities. 

Laszlo Papp and Panagiotis Lazos now want to continue the eTwinning project that they initiated a few months ago and agreed to prepare a joint project about experimental physics and sciences for the next European Science on Stage festival 2017 in Hungary. The eTwinning platform will be a useful tool in synchronizing the activities between the two schools and to present new ideas and activities. In a next step, Panagiotis Lazos will visit Laszlo Papp in Romania for further collaboration.  

Both teachers have attended the Science on Stage festival 2015 in London.

The teacher exchange is a follow-up activity of the European Science on Stage festival.

Canadian-French follow-up project born at the Science on Stage festival 2015

As first part of a follow-up project born at Science on Stage London 2015 Festival, Anjuli Ahooja, from the Appleby College in Ontario, Canada, and Jean-Luc Richter, from the College J.J.Waltz in Alsace, France, both physics teacher, initiated a class to class skype session in school that took place on Tuesday 6 October 2015. 28 students from each country presented themselves, in english and french, shortly telling about their hobbies and favorite teaching subjects. With the « magic » of skype, they where able to shorten the 6400 km distance between their two classrooms.

After choosing pairs of students and setting up a collaborative work environement using Microsoft OneOne, the students will work on the concept of electrical power and energy. As the electrical infrastructure is very different in France and in Canada, the students will learn how this difference affects the electrical appliance and their cost of use. The students will focus on two main fields of study: cooking and leisure.

By studying for e.g. how much energy is used to cook a traditional family meal in France and in Canada, the students will gain knowledge about differences in the traditions of both countries and learn to better take account of electrical energy to minimize the waste of energy and the ecological impact of this use. Furthermore the students will hava a look at how the energy is produced in both countries and analyse how this can affect the CO2 emissions, an interesting introduction to the COP21 which will take place this winter in Paris.

As most students nowadays spend a lot of time playing video games, the study of energy used for leisure will make a connection on how the differences in electric AC frequency affect the refreshment of the pictures on TV connected game devices. This study will be extended to the relation of the number of images per seconds related to the human eye perception, as both countries students have to study the optical function of the eye.

The common project work will start in December and in the meantime, students will communicate using skype and social networks to better know each others.

 

Italy, France and UK: Coming together for a teacher training in Naples

From 11-12 September Science on Stage Italy organised an Italian-French teacher training on 'Smartphone & Science' at the Città della Scienza in Naples. Based on the brochure iStage 2 various workshops on the use and benefit of smartphones in science teaching were offered. Course instructors were Jean-Luc Richter from Science on Stage France as well as Lorenza Resta and Immacolata Ercolino from Science on Stage Italy who assisted in the development of the brochure. As you can see by the pictures, the teacher training was not only very well-attended but the participants also enjoyed themselves at the workshops. Also invited to Naples was Alessio Bernadelli from Science on Stage UK: As part of the Science on Stage follow-up programme 'Take a workshop to your country' he presented his project 'Developing Science understanding through misconceptions' from the Science on Stage festival 2015 in London.
