(Berlin, 4th July 2017) Making Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics (short: STEM) a vivid and colourful experience? The teachers at the Science on Stage festival 2017 know how to enthuse their students for science: From 29 June to 2 July around 450 participants from 30 countries came together at Europe’s largest educational fair for science teachers at the Kölcsey Convention Centre in Debrecen, Hungary, to present enthralling teaching ideas from teachers for teachers. The most innovative projects were awarded by Science on Stage Europe with the European STEM Teacher Award.

Inventing the Future of Science Education: Europe’s best science teachers 2017

Nine teachers received the European STEM Teacher Award. The prize winners hail this year from Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Switzerland. With projects like ‘Optical Projection CT Scanner’, ‘Technology of Metal Manufacturing’ or ‘Solar Coker and Distilla “Sun”’they not only amazed their colleagues but also an international jury. The jury complimented the teachers for their outstanding commitment in bringing STEM teaching to a higher level with exceptional ideas and teaching methods:

‘The awarded projects show that fascinating students for STEM needs first and foremost one thing: Teachers with creative ideas who are eager to make a difference and inspire students and colleagues alike. We are proud to give these teachers a platform with our event’, says Michalis Hadjimarcou, Coordinator of Science on Stage Cyprus and Vice Chair of Science on Stage Europe.

Their projects will now find their way into classrooms all across Europe through teacher trainings or teaching materials forwarded by the education initiative Science on Stage Europe.

Science on Stage: Best practice from teachers for teachers

Science on Stage started as an education initiative funded by the European Union. Since 2007 the initiative has been continued by Europe’s most committed science teachers: The non-profit association is the biggest pan-European network for science educators reaching around 100,000 pedagogues. It supports the improvement of teaching by connecting teachers with exceptional hands-on ideas for science classes across borders. Teachers from 30 countries come together every two years to exchange ideas on the Science on Stage festival, an educational fair that has in the past been hosted in Berlin, Copenhagen, the border cities Frankfurt (Oder) / S?ubice and London. The 10th European Science on Stage festival was this year hosted by Science on Stage Hungary in cooperation with Science on Stage Europe. It was under the patronage of Mr Tibor Navracsics, Member of the European Commission. Further patrons to the festival were Zoltán Balog, Minister of Human Capacities as well as Dr. József Pálinkás, President of National Research, Development and Innovation Office.

The main supporter of the network Science on Stage is the Federation of German Employers’ Associations in the Metal and Electrical Engineering Industries (GESAMTMETALL) with its initiative ‘think ING.’.

Science on Stage Europe provides a European platform for science teachers to exchange teaching concepts and to share ideas during various activities such as educational fairs, workshops and teacher trainings. Science on Stage was launched in the year 2000 and reaches approximately 100,000 teachers and teacher trainers across 30 countries. A network of National Steering Committees in these countries provides the interface to their national science teaching communities. Science on Stage Europe is the umbrella organisation that supports the member countries with the realisation of their activities and helps to coordinate Science on Stage festivals.
