Astrobiology in Primary School: New teaching material available

Astrobiology is a multidisciplinary science which covers various areas of traditional sciences. In this innovative project first presented at Diverciencia, the science fair of Algeciras, Spain, project-based learning on the topic of "searching for water in the universe" complements the primary school curriculum with practical experiments and fun classroom activities for students aged 8 to 12. It was shown at the Science on Stage festival 2022 in Prague as part of an “Astrobiology in Primary School“ project which was awarded the first prize in the category “Science for the Youngest“.

The project is now available on our website as a digital learning resource with detailed description of methods and theoretical background information. The material is grouped into four parts comprising a total of 12 activities through which students can learn about our solar system, the origin of life and the conditions in which it can exist, some of the physical and chemical properties of water as a compound, how water affects our lives, and how extraterrestrial water can help space missions. Browse through the activities and get some inspiration for your next science classes or project week!

Thank you to Juan Antonio Prieto Sánchez and María Pilar Orozco Sáenz for sharing and writing up their material. To take a look back at the festival 2022 and find out what's in store at the upcoming festival in Turku, Finland, browse our festivals page.
