Science for a sustainable planet: science festival in Rethymno, Crete
On Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th of May, for the third consecutive year, a science festival was organised in Rethymno. The celebration is organised by the primary and secondary education departments of Rethymno in collaboration with the Laboratory of Science Teaching of the University of Crete and the Institute of Plasma and Laser Physics of the Hellenic University of Crete. This year's theme was "The Role of Science in Environment, Climate and Ecology for a Sustainable Planet". During the festival, among other activities, experiments and school projects were presented by student groups from the schools of Rethymnon. Science on Stage was present. A team from the Second Chance School, an evening middle school for adults, presented the work of Louisa Dimitriou “ Electricity from sea waves”, and the team of 4th Gymnasium of Rethymnon presented the work of Kostis Chalkiadakis “Is the lettuce salad breathing inside your fridge?”. This was preceded by an in-class presentation of the works and a discussion with the students from science teacher Kostis Chalkiadakis. Both of these projects were presented in the 2024 Science On Stage Festival at Turku, Finland.
Dozens of students, parents and teachers of Rethymnon participated in the events of the festival and watched the demonstration of the experiments.
