#sons2024: Latvian projects selected

On September 9, 2023, the Latvia national science teachers’ competition „Science on Stage” took place in Jelgava. The competition was organised in the framework of the Technology and Innovation Festival "Mehatrons" which is organised every autumn to address young people, motivate them to learn to engineer, as well as to develop children's technical creativity, linking technical sciences, education and modern technologies and see the newest developments in the industry.

The national competition was organized by the Zemgele region Human Resources and Competences development centre in cooperation with Jelgava Municipality and the National Centre for Education of the Republic of Latvia.

During the festival, 20 teachers presented their teaching ideas to the jury and visitors of the festival.
The participants coming from various parts of Latvia presented their ideas on how to teach mathematics through art, how to make a tornado and a rain cloud, or a robot, or how to use a black box to raise students’ interest to do research, etc. The winners of the competition who will represent Latvia at the European Science on Stage festival in 2024 in Turku (Finland) are:

1st prize: STEMbox by Anna Beate Bumane, Tomass Tumpelis (Tukums Raiņa State Gymnasium, Tukums Digital Innovation centre)

2nd prize: Planning, implementation, and analysis of research on "Seed germination and plant growth conditions”  - by Indra Būmane (Tukums E. Birznieka Upisa Primary School No. 1)

3rd prize: “What is in the black box?” by Natalija Stocka, Josifs Spirts (Jelgava Secondary School No 5)
