Goal Stock Exchange – The Statistics behind Sports Betting

Football is one of the most powerful businesses within the sport industry worldwide. The sports betting industry alone is worth anywhere between 606 and 870 billion Euro a year. In order to predict whether a football team is going to win or lose and to calculate betting odds a successful bookmaker not only needs a good deal of luck but also profound mathematical knowledge.

In the teaching unit ‚Goal Stock Exchange‘ students discover statistics based on the sample database of the German Bundesliga 1. To start with they learn how to design a database using spreadsheets. These are used to analyse a variety of complex variables so the students can calculate the goal statistics for each football team.
