AI with micro:bit: teacher training workshop in Eskişehir
On September 5th, 2025, a teacher training workshop “AI with micro:bit” was held in Eskişehir, Türkiye. The event was organised by Semih Esendemir with the support of the Emine Emir Şahbaz Science and Art Center, where the workshop was held, and a grant from Science on Stage's "Coding for our Future" program.
The workshop, held by Semih Esendemir, focused on introducing Artificial Intelligence concepts through hands-on practice with the BBC micro:bit. Teachers explored how AI can be applied in classrooms by completing the “AI Activity Timer” project, where participants collected movement data, trained a machine learning model, and deployed it to the micro:bit. The main theme was to increase teachers’ digital competencies and demonstrate practical AI applications that can inspire students in STEM education.
12 STEM teachers working with gifted students aged 10–16 participated. The involvement of teachers from different disciplines reflects an interdisciplinary approach, which is essential for fostering the development of gifted learners. For the Emine Emir Şahbaz Science and Art Center, bringing together educators from diverse STEM fields supports collaboration, enriches classroom practices, and strengthens their mission to provide innovative learning opportunities for talented students.
"It was so much fun", one participant expressed: "Kids will love it too!"
